Cool For Cats

I have a confession to make.

I think you're hot.

I mean really hot.

So hot, in fact, I don't think I can even see straight.

I'm getting a little woozy just being near you.

Maybe we should cool you down a little,

before I lose control...

As a gal who eschews air conditioning, and loves heat, even I get a little too steamy now and then. So, when the mercury soars, I have a few little tricks in my garter for staying cool that I know you're gonna love.

1. Take A Tip From Marilyn

"When it gets hot like this, you know what I do? I keep my undies in the icebox!" From The Seven Year Itch.

"When it gets hot like this, you know what I do? I keep my undies in the icebox!" From The Seven Year Itch.

Undies in the icebox? Hell yes! I do it all the time. It's equally saucy for bras and little slips or nighties, too. Just keep a rectangular container on the top shelf of your fridge, and fold your delicates in there like a little lingerie display. When you feel kind of tired and a little grungy from the heat of the day, take something cute out and change. It's really fun. And fellas, get in on this. You''ll love it too. Promise.

2. Immerse and Be Naked

Sounds amazing already, no? This is my FAVE summer ritual. Run a cool bath. Flick in 8-10 drops of peppermint essential oil. *note: peppermint can cause a little sensitivity, so if you aren't used to it, try 5 drops and work your way up.

Soak.  You won't feel much while you're bathing, but when you emerge...oooh! You'll feel so cool and refreshed, literally letting all the nonsense of the day leave your beautiful body, stepping out light as air.

Here's the best part: Now lie naked on your bed, with a fan facing you. Close your eyes and revel in the minty rush as your body dries. It's delicious!

*For pros only: If you can handle it, after the bath but before the fan, put a few more drops of peppermint into your body oil or lotion.

3. Get Misty With Me

And, again, plants come to save the day! Another excellent use for your peppermint essential oil: Tap 5-10 drops into a spray container filled with rosewater, lavender, or orange flower water. Shake it, and spritz yourself whenever the mood suits you.  I'm a huge fan of 2-3 oz little travel bottles in pretty colors to carry with you. In summer, I like to keep one on me filled with this potion, plus another with my DIY insect repellant. Mist your friends! Offer a little spritz to weary strangers! You'll find yourself quite popular, trust.

3. On The Rocks, Baby

Now pour yourself a beverage...over ice. Flavored ice, that is.

Just brew some of your fave teas, let them cool, and pour into ice trays together with herbs you love. Or juice a little fruit and do the same. It's sparkly, tasty, and looks glam in your glass...

Chamomile Mint Ice

Try these:

  • Chamomile tea with fresh mint leaves
  • Strawberry juice with basil leaves
  • Lemon tea or juice with blueberries and thyme sprigs
  • Rose tea with fresh or dried petals

You get the idea, Darlings. Be creative!

And what about our furry Loves?

My familiars, though arid creatures, do appreciate a few gestures in the extreme temps. Besides the obviousness of keeping shady spots available to them, leaving a fan on, and going for outdoor jaunts only in the early mornings and in the evenings, there are a few special tricks I employ:

1. Icy Sensuality

My cats love when I run an ice cube slowly down their spines, around their necks, on the top of their sweet heads, and even in their bellies. As the cube drips, I massage it into their fur, and turn it all into a languid cat play. (Dogs enjoy it too, though mostly down their backs and around their necks. They're not really down with the feline undulating.)

2. A Cold Drink

I also pop a cube into their water. Mine don't drink a ton, as, again, they are desert babies, and I give them raw veggies in with their food. But I do like to have it available, especially during a heat wave.

I'll also splash a little coconut water in with their regular spring water, to ensure they are well hydrated if needed. They like the sweet taste!

3. Groom Me, Mama

This is the purrfect time to give all your fuzzy darlings some extra brushing. It removes excess fur, and helps them to keep their temperature regulated. It also keeps the extra eight hundred pounds of hair off your sofa.

Well, now that you've cooled off a bit,

let's turn the heat up again,

shall we?
